A Brief History of Gubbio, Italy
When I first arrived in Gubbio, I wasn’t prepared for how deeply its history would captivate me. The town has a fascinating past, and walking its ancient streets feels like stepping into a living museum. Gubbio’s story spans centuries, and every corner has a tale to tell.
Originally founded by the Umbrians, an ancient people of central Italy, Gubbio’s roots go back as far as the 5th century BC. The Romans, who arrived in the 3rd century BC, transformed Gubbio into a prosperous town. You can still see their influence in the Roman Theater, a structure that was built to seat up to 6,000 people! Gubbio became a key city in the Roman province of Umbria, and much of its character today stems from this period.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Gubbio entered a new phase in history as a medieval town, and this is where things got even more interesting. The medieval period saw Gubbio rise to prominence, especially under the rule of the Da Montefeltro family in the 14th century. The town flourished as a center of art and culture, and its medieval architecture is what defines Gubbio today. Walking through Gubbio, you’re surrounded by centuries-old buildings that tell the stories of the town’s rich and colorful past.

Things to Do in Gubbio Italy: Must-See Sights
Now, let me explain the sights I absolutely fell in love with in Gubbio. The best part? Each one is tied to the town’s long history.
1. Roman Theater
The Roman Theater is the first sight you’ll see as you approach Gubbio. One of Gubbio’s most fascinating sites, the Roman Theater dates back to the 1st century BC and could seat up to 6,000 people. The structure is nestled at the foot of Mount Ingino, and I can just imagine how grand it must have looked back in its prime. You can still sense the energy of the past, and I found it incredibly humbling. Although some sections are in ruins, it’s still an impressive sight and a perfect spot for photos. Admission fee is €3.
Pro tip: Take the time to walk around the site and soak in the views—it’s even more magical at sunset when the stone walls glow in the fading light.

2. Piazza Grande
This square is the heartbeat of Gubbio, and I immediately fell for its charm. Surrounded by medieval buildings, it felt like stepping into a time capsule. The Piazza Grande is where people have gathered for centuries, and the vibe is always lively, whether it’s for a festival or just a quiet afternoon.
Pro tip: If you’re lucky enough to be in Gubbio during one of its famous festivals, Piazza Grande becomes a hub of activity. The Piazza Grande square fills with excitement during the Corsa dei Ceri in May.
![A Hidden Umbrian Treasure: Top Things to Do in Gubbio Italy 5 Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio is a must-see on any Umbria road trip](https://www.worldtravelconnector.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Palazzo-dei-Consoli-in-Gubbio--1024x681.jpg)
3. Palace of the Consuls (Palazzo dei Consoli)
The Palazzo dei Consoli is a towering example of Gubbio’s medieval might. This grand palace, built in the 14th century, was once the seat of power for the town’s rulers- Gubbio’s consuls and the courts. Inside, there’s a museum today that showcases artifacts from Gubbio’s long history, including medieval arms, pottery, and paintings. The most important exhibits are the Iguvine Tablets (the Eugubian Tablets/Tables) – seven bronze tablets from ancient Gubbio dating back to the 2nd century BC, written in Latin and the ancient Umbrian language. The tablets serve as a Rosetta Stone to unlock the key to the ancient Umbrian language. Admission fee is €7.
Pro tip: Don’t miss the panoramic view from the upper floors of the palace—looking out over the town and surrounding hills, I got a sense of just how powerful Gubbio once was.

4. Gubbio Cathedral
The Gubbio Cathedral is beautiful in its simplicity, and when I stepped inside, I was struck by the sense of peace. Gubbio’s Cathedral is dedicated to St Mariano and St Giacomo, two martyrs saints. The cathedral is home to artwork spanning from the 14th to the 16th centuries. I especially loved the frescoes, which capture stories of the town’s religious heritage. The cathedral also houses a relic—believed to be a finger of St. John the Baptist, which adds to its mystique.
Pro tip: Take some quiet time here. The space is calm, and there’s something about the artwork that really invites reflection.

5. Diocesan Museum
This is one of those places that’s a bit off the beaten path, but it’s well worth the visit. The Diocesan Museum in the Palazzo del Capitolo dei Canonici, next to the Cathedral of Gubbio. The museum features religious artifacts and art that highlight the town’s deep connection to the church. The museum is home to an enormous 15th-century wine barrel that can hold over 20,000 liters of wine! It’s a quirky yet impressive piece of Gubbio’s past.
Pro tip: The wine barrel is massive—it’s one of those sights that makes you stop and stare, in awe at its sheer size. It is a must-see in Gubbio!

6. Church of St. Francis
One of my most memorable experiences in Gubbio was visiting the church of St. Francis. The church was built on the land of the ancient Spadalonga family who cothed Saint Francis in 1206-1207 after he abandoned the family home and renounced his wealth. Saint Franicis of Assisi wore a habit here for the first time. The church of San Francis is adorned with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries, including a fresco depicting the Story of the Virgin Mary (over 17 panels!), a fresco about two episodes of the life of Saint Francis, and a fresco of Jesus on the Throne with Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Francis and Saint Anthony. On my visit, the colors were still so vivid, and the spiritual energy in the basilica was palpable. It’s a serene spot, offering both beauty and peace.
Pro tip: Be sure to check out the apse, where some of the most stunning frescoes are found (a fresco of Jesus on the Throne with Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Francis, and Saint Anthony). I could’ve stayed there for hours just admiring the delicate details.

7. Wolf of Gubbio
The legend of the Wolf of Gubbio is a famous story tied to St. Francis. The wolf, which terrorized the town, was tamed by St. Francis of Assisi, and there’s a statue of the wolf just outside the church of St Francis.
Pro tip: Ask locals about the legend—it’s one of those stories that’s great to hear firsthand.

8. Church of St. John the Baptist
This charming church was a quiet retreat for me while I explored Gubbio. The Church of St. John the Baptist offers a peaceful space for contemplation, and it’s not as crowded as some of the bigger attractions in town. The church was the first cathedral of Gubbio and has lots of artwork – paintings, and frescoes. The highlight here for me was the sweeping views of the surrounding hills and valleys from the church’s steps.
Pro tip: If you’re looking for a spot to relax and take in Gubbio’s natural beauty, this is the place.

9. Ducal Palace
The Ducal Palace is another impressive building in Gubbio, built during the Renaissance for the Duke of Urbino. It’s not just about the grand architecture. Inside, you’ll find a huge collection of paintings from the 13th to 18th centuries and a copy of the Duke’s Studiolo (Duke’s Little Study), a small, but meticulously decorated Duke’s retreat room that shows the wealth and importance of the family. The original Studiolo is kept in MET in New York today.
Pro tip: The quiet courtyard and gardens are the perfect place to rest after exploring the palace’s rooms.

10. Fountain of the Madman (Fonte dei Matti)
This quirky fountain in the Piazza del Bargello became one of my favorite spots in Gubbio. According to legend, anyone who goes around the fountain 3 times and baptizes themselves with the waters from the fountain, can get a “license of madness,”. the license is requested in today’s souvenir shop next to the fountain in the Bargello Palace. Though I didn’t go around the fountain, I couldn’t resist the urge to take a photo with the fountain!
Pro tip: It’s a fun spot for a quick stop and photo-op, especially if you’re in the mood for something a bit unusual.

11. Pick up some souvenirs in Gubbio
Gubbio is known for its craftsmanship, and you’ll find lovely shops selling ceramics, woodwork, leather, wrought iron, and food items like truffles, cheese, honey, and pasta. Gubbio is known for its majolica, a special technique for glazed pottery painting. Majolica production started in Gubbio in the 15th century.
Pro tip: Look for hand-painted ceramics—they make perfect souvenirs.

12. Gubbio’s Funicular (Funiva Colle Eletto)
Gubbio’s funicular is a stand-up basket (like a bird cage!) with railings to chest level. The funicular is similar to a ski lift. It takes up to two people and goes from the lower Gubbio to the top of Mount Ingino, which watches over Gubbio. Take the funicular to the top of Mount Ingino to visit the Basilica of St Ubaldo and for spectacular views of the town and surrounding landscapes. Return ticket on the funicular cost €7.
Pro tip: Try to time your visit for sunset—it’s truly breathtaking.

13. Basilica of St. Ubaldo
At the top of the mountain, this basilica is dedicated to Gubbio’s patron saint. St Ubaldo was a bishop of Gubbio in the 12th century and today is the patron saint of Gubbio. The Basilica is home to his remains, held in a glass coffin. The Basilica is a peaceful place to reflect and take in the panoramic views of Gubbio.
Pro tip: Take a funicular ride up the mountain, but hike down for different perspectives of the town. There is a restaurant and a bar near the Basilica to refresh yourself if needed!

14. The Fortress of Mount Ingino (Rocca Maggiore del Monte Ingino)
An ancient fortress overlooking the town, the Fortress of Mount Ingino offers 360-degree views and a quiet spot to relax. Remains of the 12th-century fortress are only a few steps away from the Basilica of St Ubaldo. Don’t miss out on climbing up to the fortress. The best panoramic views of Gubbio and the valley await you!

If you happen to visit Gubbio on May 15th (the Feast Day of Saint Ubaldo), you’ll witness the incredible Corsa dei Ceri, a race where teams (dressed in yellow, blue, or black) carry huge wooden candles through the streets. 3 teams, each consisting of 12 men, carry on their shoulders the 5 m-high wooden ‘candles’ (ceri) with statues of 3 saints: Saint Ubaldo (patron saint of Gubbio), Saint George, and Saint Anthony the Abbot at the top of them. The race starts at Piazza Grande at noon on May 15 and goes from the Piazza Grande uphill to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo.
It’s a thrilling experience not to be missed!

16. The Crossbow Palio (Palio Della Balestra)
Another exciting event to plan to visit Gubbio for is the Palio Della Balestra, a crossbow contest held last Sunday in May every year. The Crossbow Palio is a shooting competition dating back to the 15th century. The competitors hit the target, called corniolo or tasso, with an arrow shot from a crossbow at a distance of 36 meters. Over 400 participants, dressed in medieval costumes, take part in this historical event in Gubbio!
The Palio Della Balestra is a great way to experience Gubbio’s medieval spirit. It is among the most exciting times to visit Gubbio!
