Base Yourself in Positano: A Dreamy Start to Your Amalfi Coast Adventure

Positano is not just a town – it’s a dream. As soon as you arrive, you’ll be mesmerized by the cascading pastel-colored buildings that tumble down the cliffside toward the sparkling sea. Walking through its narrow streets, lined with boutiques and cafes, is like stepping into an artist’s masterpiece. I couldn’t stop smiling, and my senses got overwhelmed by the beauty when I saw Positano for the first time.

For the ultimate luxury experience, I highly recommend staying at Le Sirenuse, a five-star hotel with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. It’s the perfect place to unwind and indulge, with exceptional service, gourmet restaurants, and an infinity pool that overlooks the sea.
For something equally charming but a bit more affordable, Hotel Poseidon offers a gorgeous mid-range option. The views are equally stunning, and it’s an easy walk down to the beach or up to the town’s lively heart.
For budget-conscious travelers, consider Casa Buonocore – a hidden gem tucked away in a quieter part of Positano. It’s charming, cozy, and affordable, with a welcoming atmosphere.

Day 2: Amalfi – A Town Steeped in History

After soaking in Positano, it’s time to visit Amalfi, just a 30-minute drive away along the scenic coastal road. If not by a rental car, you can rent a scooter and drive, hire a taxi (expensive), or take a 25-minute ferry from Positano to Amalfi (€ 9-14). Amalfi is the historic heart of the region, once a powerful maritime republic. Its charm lies in the fusion of history, architecture, and natural beauty.

What to Do in Amalfi:

  • Duomo di Amalfi: Visit the grand cathedral, perched at the top of a dramatic staircase. The intricate mosaics and the stunning bronze doors will leave you in awe. Its crypt houses the remains of St Andrew, the Apostle. The cathedral is free to visit. But, there is an entrance fee of 3 € for the crypt and cloisters.

Day 3: Ravello & Atrani – The Heart of Italian Culture

On Day 3, head to Ravello, a short 45-minute drive from Positano. Ravello is a hilltop town on the Amalfi Coast. You can reach it by car, SITA bus, or rental scooter. Known for its stunning villas and panoramic views, Ravello feels like a step back in time, yet has a vibrant arts scene. It’s the kind of place that inspires creativity, with sweeping views over the Mediterranean.

After Ravello, venture down to Atrani, a sleepy village just a few minutes from Amalfi. If not by vehicle, I recommend taking the 1700 stairs down from Ravello to Atrani. My sunset walk down brought me some of the most magical moments on the Amalfi Coast. Atrani is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most picturesque places on the coast. Strolling through its narrow alleys, you’ll feel like you’ve discovered a secret.

What to Do in Ravello & Atrani:

  • Villa Rufolo: Don’t miss the stunning gardens and panoramic views from this 13th-century villa. The views from here are magical, with the entire coastline spread out before you. The entrance fee is 10 €.

  • Piazzetta: Spend some time people-watching in the famous Piazzetta, the heart of Capri, where the island’s jet-set crowd gathers.
  • Anacapri: Take a chairlift to the top of Mount Solaro for panoramic views over the island and beyond.

On Day 5, venture off the beaten path to discover the stunning beauty of Praiano, Fiordo di Furore, and Grotta dello Smeraldo. Praiano is only 20 minutes from Positano. Fiordo di Furore is 10 minutes from Praiano.

Day 6: Hike The Path of Gods

There’s a hike on the Amalfi Coast that feels like it was designed by the gods themselves. It’s called the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei), and from the moment you step onto the trail, it becomes clear why this awe-inspiring path earned its celestial name. Winding its way through ancient hillside villages, rugged cliffs, and lush Mediterranean landscapes, this hike is a soul-stirring adventure that rewards you with some of the most breathtaking views on Earth.
The Path of the Gods stretches about 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles) from Bomerano to Nocelle, two small villages perched above Positano. While the path itself can be completed in around 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace and how many stops you make to take in the views (and trust me, you’ll want to stop often), it’s the kind of hike that allows you to surrender to the rhythm of nature.
Take this private walking tour and hike the Path of Gods.

Treat yourself to a delicious Mediterranean dinner at Il Capitano in Positano after a hiking day. The restaurant is a local favorite, offering some of the best panoramic views of the sea and the famous cliffs. Perched above the main beach, this restaurant provides an intimate, unpretentious vibe that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem. The terrace here is spectacular—wide, open, and set high above the water, offering an unobstructed view of Positano’s coastline.

Day 7: Vietri Sul Mare and Salerno – The Beach Gems

Vietri Sul Mare, located about 45 minutes from Positano, is famous for its colorful ceramics. It’s an idyllic little town where you can wander through narrow streets, admire the artistic tiles, and enjoy the slower pace of life. Vietri Sul Mare has the longest and sandiest beaches on the Amalfi Coast. The beach of Vietri Sul Mar consists of four gold sand beaches. Enjoy this beach paradise! Shop ceramics in the unique shade of “Vietri yellow”. Or, get an emerald green donkey statue (a symbol of the Amalfi Coast).

If you have time, head to Salerno, a larger city just 20 minutes away. Salerno offers more of an authentic Italian experience and is known for its charming old town and lovely coastal promenade. Wander its historic center (Centro Storico), check its main square Piazza Alfano I, relax in the Giardino della Minerva (Garden of Minerva), and visit Castello di Arechi, a medieval castle perched on a hill above the city.
